ABOUT THE BOOK: TIGHT HEADS is the first full-color photo publication from Sam Sweet's All Night Menu Books, an imprint dedicated to lost histories of Los Angeles. The book explores an unearthed collection of Polaroids taken by the actress Candy Clark during the 1970s and early 1980s. Her disarmingly intimate portraits (Clark nicknamed them "tight heads") place iconic Hollywood figures alongside artists, writers, and local characters known and unknown. Paired with personal remembrances from Clark, the project is part visual autobiography, part love letter to Los Angeles, and a rare female perspective on a much-mythologized period.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
CANDY CLARK (photographer/storyteller) - Candy Clark grew up in Fort Worth, Texas, and fell into acting by accident. While working as a model and extra in New York City, she was convinced to try out for a part in John Huston's Fat City (1971). That role led to her Oscar-nominated performance as Debbie Dunham in George Lucas's American Graffiti (1973), which was only her second time on screen. After moving to Los Angeles, she immediately started documenting her growing circle of friends with a Polaroid SX-70. Since then, she's appeared in over 80 movie and television projects, including The Man Who Fell To Earth, At Close Range, Zodiac, and Twin Peaks: The Return. She lives in Van Nuys.
SAM SWEET (writer/editor/publisher) - Sam Sweet's writing has appeared in the New Yorker, the New York Times, The Paris Review, the Los Angeles Times, Harper's, and the Baffler. In 2014, he started All Night Menu, an ongoing series of microhistories of Los Angeles. The project began with five books with stories based on specific addresses. Since then, it has expanded into a range of publications, conversations, and archival projects. Candy Clark first shared her photo collection during an interview for Sweet's All Night Menu Questionnaire, an ongoing interview series that explores personal histories of Los Angeles through 24 questions about sense memories of place. He lives in Highland Park.
