This is the first event in the run up to the launch of Perfect Pitch, a Community Benefit Society (based on the Co-operative model) who's mission is to establish a Music Arts Building to keep music making and arts practise alive in the borough for generations to come. A permanent home for music projects, charities and workers to thrive without threat of eviction or developers.
This event is supported by Brixton Hill Studios
This first event is a gig starring 3 outstanding musical acts; SCUD FM, Interrobang‽ and Subliminal Girls. 3 bands with roots and connections in the local music scene.
SCUD FM is a London-based supergroup known for its raw, punky energy and industrial-tinged dancefloor anthems. The band, formed around 2018, features members from various London creative scenes, including Meatraffle, Fat White Family, and Sonic Eyes. Their music, often described as "Marxist/Leninist Big Brother house band" meets "naughty Baby Socialist Anarchists," blends repetition, sampling, and a punk sensibility.
Interrobang‽ is a post-punk band formed by ex-Chumbawamba members Dunstan Bruce (vocals), Harry Hamer (drums), and Stephen Griffin (guitar). The band's name, inspired by the punctuation mark combining a question mark and exclamation point, reflects their music which is described as sharp, concise, and unpredictable, with influences from bands like Wire, The Fall, and Gang of Four. The band currently feature Stephen Gilchrist, director of Brixton Hill Studios on drums.
Subliminal Girls are a London-based indie pop/disco band known for their catchy tunes and energetic live performances. Formed in the mid-2000s, they gained recognition with singles like "Burn Koko/Mirror" and "Hungry Like The Wolf". The band features members with roots in other London groups like The Art Goblins and Rhesus. After a period of activity and reunion shows, they released a new EP titled "Vanity Project" in 2022.
Perfect Pitch Background
Perfect Pitch is an ethical landlord and property management collective working to build a sustainable shelter for Musical Arts communities in South London. Future proofing for safe and affordable studios and collective spaces that enrich creative cultures and promote public engagement opportunities.
Registered as a Community Benefit Society (CBS) with Charitable Aims, Perfect Pitch holds a similar outlook to the Creative Land Trust‘s ethos (for Visual Arts spaces), and the community ownership model of Music Venue Trust. The goal is to buy a property outright in London, enabling the CBS to offer controlled rent, and guarantee that the building will be used as a facility solely for music creatives and businesses, in perpetuity.
Why Lambeth?
From Brixton Academy to Bowie’s birthplace, Electric Avenue to the Windmill independent music venue, this Lambeth area is famously linked with music making. From dub and reggae, to club culture, and with a new wave of cutting edge South London indie bands, Brixton is as alive with musical talent as it ever was.
However, over the last 10 years, the area has lost a number of music spaces, from recording studios (priced out due to the takeover of the Business Centre in Loughborough Junction),
