Music Learning Theory Workshop for Music Teachers

Hey music teachers! Are you looking to develop your teaching and your musicianship and engage with your students in a whole new way? Join us for a fun and interactive workshop that introduces you to some practical applications of Music Learning Theory. Learn new techniques, share ideas, and connect with fellow teachers in a supportive environment.

Music Learning Theory is a theory of how we learn when we learn music. (Check out the Gordon Institude for Music Learning for more information).

Exploration, Creativity and Improvisation - these words seem to gathering more and more attention and mentions in some music teaching circles. Most of us (especially “classically” trained teachers) were NOT taught using any of these types of activity in our lessons. How do they relate to how we teach? Aren't method books enough?

If you are curious, please join us to explore this in a non-judgmental, no pressure space where you can then reflect on what you have experienced with others in the same position.

We are three teachers who have started this journey and in this process we have discovered Music Learning Theory - the theory of how we learn when we learn music (it’s very similar to how we learn language). We would love to share with you some ways in which we used Music Learning Theory principles in our teaching and our self development as musicians/teachers.

We will be running three sessions at this workshop where you will experience aspects of Music Learning Theory (MLT).

• Piano and MLT (Marta Maroto)
• Musicianship and MLT (Melanie Jones)
• Early Years Music and MLT (Trish Cummings)

Each session will introduce you to practical ways in which each of us is using our understanding of how humans learn music to direct and inform our teaching. After each session we will have a break for refreshments, discussion, reflection and questions.
