JMW Turner is one of the most celebrated painters in history. Join us for this fabulous and informative talk by Dr Matthew Morgan.
Known as the Painter of Light his innovative techniques and unique style earned him a place in art history as one of the greatest painters of all time. The vibrancy of the colours used by him in his works was much remarked on by contemporaries, most particularly his use of yellows. Throughout his life Turner was a deeply experimental artist who explored the relationships that colours can have to each other and to human emotions. He was also intellectually curious, and it was inevitable that he should be drawn to colour theory and seek to apply some of these ideas. This talk will examine Turner's methods and techniques as well as the impact of colour theory on his work.
Dr. Matthew Morgan is an art historian and specialist in 18th- and 19th-century British art. He is the former Director of Turner’s House Museum in Twickenham, where he oversaw exhibitions and public programming focused on the life and work of J.M.W. Turner. He is a lecturer at Birkbeck, University of London. His research explores themes of British identity, landscape, and artistic innovation. Dr. Morgan is a sought-after speaker, known for his accessible and engaging talks that bring new insight into British art and its historical context.
