West Ham Station
Memorial avenue, London, United Kingdom
This walking route, led by Newham New Deal Partnership, reacquaints us with Victorian places off the main roads, and explores how Newham’s rich history developed following regeneration efforts in the early 2000s, transforming its parks, public spaces and community buildings into a network of green and community spaces with a focus on sustainability.
We will meet at the entrance to West Ham Tube Station at 11am.
Walk Stops:
1 West Ham Memorial Park: A historic green space and first home to West Ham United FC, revitalised through New Deal for Communities regeneration with new play and sports facilities.
2 Grassroots: A landmark eco-building opened in 2005 to revitalise Memorial Park and deliver community health and childcare services.
3 East London Cemetery: A Victorian cemetery rich in social history, it holds memorials to Blitz victims, the Silvertown explosion, and East London’s diverse communities.
4: Hermit Road Recreation Ground: A green space with an adventure playground and a rose garden honouring suffragette Daisy Parsons, revitalised as part of Newham’s “arc of opportunities.”
5: A flagship eco-building and community centre opened in 2005, The Hub brought services, events, foreign VIPs and sustainable design to the heart of the New Deal for Communities area.
