Engineers are increasingly exploring what will be involved in the shift from sustainable to regenerative design. There is a growing consensus that the ultimate aim is to reach the point where we have integrated everything we do as humans into the web of life. In this talk Michael Pawlyn will summarise the key engineering aspects from his new book – a fully updated, expanded and illustrated edition of Biomimicry in Architecture (RIBA Publishing’s bestselling title of the last 15 years). He makes the case that the systems and adaptations that have evolved in the living world are excellent models to inspire a rethinking of construction – from the materials we use, to the structures we build, the way we manage water and how we control temperature in buildings and cities.
