Join one of the most prominent living European poets Tomas Venclova on the occasion of the new English translation of his collection of poems "The Grove of the Eumenides" (2025).
Through the poet’s singular insights, ethical endurance and profound compassion, Venclova’s masterful poetry upholds a vision of the world that enables us to endure the darkness of our time. With classical grace yet manifesting a deep commitment to remain a witness to the contemporary world, The Grove of the Eumenides is a collection of great wisdom.
With participation of Neil Astley (Bloodaxe Books). Moderated by Ellen Hinsey.
Tomas Venclova is Professor of Slavonic Literature at Yale University, and a famous Lithuanian poet, translator and essayist.
He participated in the dissident movement during the Soviet period; in 1977 he emigrated to the United States. Widely considered to be Lithuania’s greatest poet, Venclova is, as Joseph Brodsky points out in his introduction to Venclova’s Winter Dialogue, a poet who “has absorbed all the best to be found in the neighbouring territories”.
He has published over twenty books including volumes of poetry, literary criticism, political commentary, literary biography, translations, and books on Vilnius. His works have been translated into many languages, including by Czesław Miłosz into Polish, and by Joseph Brodsky into Russian. He is active in the contemporary cultural life of Lithuania and is one of Lithuania’s most respected figures.
