Want to explore the best kept secret in Wales? The ancient, hill top town of Llantrisant has a history that dates back over 1,500 years and still has many buildings dating back to the medieval period.
It is a town shaped by conflict due to its ‘gateway’ location. On the medieval border between the "Marcher" county of Glamorgan, ruled by England and the Welsh Cantrefs. Its castle once held a king of England prisoner.
It was a stop off for drovers on the ridgeway, and 6th Century Christian missionaries. It had its finest hour in 1346 when the longbowmen of the town, nicknamed 'the black army' were credited with winning the battle of Crecy. That resulted in a town charter and the establishment of the ancient order of the Freemen of Llantrisant. Their traditons, freedoms and rights still being observed to this day. It was also the home of the colourful Dr Price and the birth place of modern day cremation so far more to see here than you might expect.
