About the event

Celebrating Resistance: Doug Peacock, Pamela Uschuk & William Pitt Root
To mark the 50th anniversary of Edward Abbey’s The Monkey Wrench Gang, Elk River Books is excited to present “Celebrating Resistance: An Evening with Doug Peacock and Cutthroat Journal,” on Thursday, Aug. 21, at 7 pm. Elk River Books is located at 122 S. 2nd St. The event is free and will be followed by a reception and book signing.

The special edition of Abbey's classic tale of rebellion, camaraderie, and environmental justice features a new introduction by author and grizzly advocate, Doug Peacock—the real-life inspiration for the book’s central character, George Washington Hayduke.

According to the publisher: “This collectible anniversary edition is both a tribute to Abbey’s legacy and a timeless call-to-arms for preserving the natural world. The introduction by Peacock provides a window into his decades-long friendship with Abbey and offers fresh insights into the novel’s lasting relevance and impact.”

Peacock, recipient of a 2022 American Academy of Arts & Letters Award in Literature, is the author of Was It Worth It?: A Wilderness Warrior’s Long Trail Home, Grizzly Years: In Search of the American Wilderness, Walking It Off: A Veteran’s Chronicle of War and Wilderness and several other books recounting his life-long passion for—and battles to defend—the world’s wildest spaces. A Green Beret medic who served two tours in Vietnam, Peacock has published widely on wilderness issues.

Joining Peacock will be renowned poets and co-editors of Cutthroat: A Journal of the Arts Pamela Uschuk and William Pitt Root, who will present their 20th anniversary anthology, Taking Liberties.

This special issue features writings of resistance by 112 authors including Rita Dove, Martín Espada, CMarie Fuhrman, Joy Harjo, Linda Hogan, Pam Houston, Ilya Kaminsky, Naomi Shihab Nye and Luis Alberto Urrea.

For those who can’t attend in person, the event will live-stream at YouTube.com/ElkRiverBooks.
