On Thursday, August 21, celebrate the traditions of Japan with family-friendly activities amid the summer blooms at The Morton Arboretum.
At this special evening event, enjoy live Japanese city pop music as you take part in hands-on arts and crafts, learn anime and manga drawing techniques, shop for manga and toys, and sample authentic Japanese foods.
Event Highlights
Guest teaching artist Mr. Pintamuro (ミスターピンタムロ)—a Chicago-based muralist, illustrator, and educator from the Little Village neighborhood—will lead two free art workshops focused on the fundamental drawing techniques of manga and anime and the creative possibilities of these storytelling mediums.
Drop by the Children’s Garden to get an anime temporary tattoo and craft an origami headband.
Local organizations and vendors will be stationed at tables in Arbor Court. Shop for manga, toys, and more—and find out how to get involved with Japanese martial and cultural arts in the Chicago area.
Authentic Japanese food and drinks will be available to purchase from food trucks in Arbor Court.
Throughout the evening, guests will enjoy a live performance by pioneering DJ Van Paugam, known for championing 70s and 80s Japanese city pop music and performing globally in cities like Tokyo, Paris, and Berlin. Based in Chicago, he blends Japanese aesthetics, ritual, and philosophy into a vinyl DJ style that’s both meditative and moving.
