THE SPACE IN- BETWEEN
BILINGUAL BUTOH MA WORKSHOP
WITH YAEL KARAVAN
IN LISBON
Sat 21st and Sun 22nd June 11am-5pm
"In other forms of dance, such as flamenco or classical dance. the movements are derived from a fixed technique; they are imposed from the outside and are conventional in form. In my case, it's the contrary, my dance is far removed from conventions and techniques, it is the unveiling of the inner life."
TATSUMI HIJIKATA founder of Ankoku Butoh
Butoh is a philosophy and a way of dancing and living rather than a technique, it is a teacher for life and for the stage, it is a way of existing and of experiencing the world, from inside out through Dance.
It is the revolution of mind and body or as its founder, Tatsumi Hijikata would say,
The revolution of the FLESH.
In Japanese the concept of MA- the empty space, between two walls, two breaths, two beats or two notes, two movements, between the silence and the beginning of ...
between sky and earth, good and bad, war and peace...
The space in between is a fascinating place to be danced from in Butoh. Dedicated to my Butoh Master Tadashi Endo who has passed on the 25/05/2025 ;(
"Somewhere beyond right and wrong, there is a garden, I will meet you there," RUMI
Sharing nearly 30 years of Butoh dance experience, having danced with 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation of Butohist mainly from Japan but also from Europe, Yael gives a fascinating introduction and open doors within us to make it our own.

The main elements that will be explored in the workshop are metamorphoses, dance through imagery, presence, awareness, and the tension between opposites. The aim is to free the body from its mundane preconceived set of gestures and movements and thus allowing us to access a deeper and more authentic essence of movement and archetypal expression. Butoh is an avant-garde dance of transformation created at the end of the 50 in Japan. This workshop will also share a very unique experience, as it will be just after a weeks' research with a Brazilian indigenous tribe, exploring into the connection between their relationship with the 4 elements and Butoh.
Karavan is sharing nearly 3 decades of experience and research of Butoh, having worked with the founding members of Butoh Dance as well as 2nd and 3rd generations in Japan and Europe. Butoh is not a technique but a method and philosophy. Questioning how Butoh can be translated into a European Body and why is Butoh not just relevant but extremely vital nowadays.
