Ever wonder where our migratory hawks go in the wintertime? Join Arboretum and Grandfather Mountain staff on a day filled with scanning the skies for these migratory birds. There is a chance to see hundreds of migratory hawks as they fly by the mountain on their way south for the winter. During this day we will also talk about the different types of hawks and other birds of prey that migrate following the Appalachian Mountains.
This program will take place outside and will follow rocky paths onto the Linville Peak area. Those uncomfortable with crossing the bridge can set up a chair on the building side of the bridge but would not be present for the main counting. Bring your own chair or cushion to sit on the rocks and your binoculars or spotting scope if you have one. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time with no shade. Bring a lunch and/or snacks or plan to leave the group to purchase food from Mildred's Grill located at the Museum down the mountain a bit.
Grandfather Mountain has been participating in HawkWatch for 17 years from the Linville Peak area near the swinging bridge. Each year they have a dedicated volunteer or staff stationed on the peak for the whole month of September to take note of each migratory bird of prey they can see fly by.
Also check out other Workshops in Linville.
