The Wells’ Story
Christine and Kody got married last February, and Kody adopted Christine’s three children. Their marriage started off strong, creating an instant family. After a lot of trials and tribulations, Kody helped to put the family back together.
Last summer, Owen became very sick and was taken to the hospital several times before finally being diagnosed with hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). Owen was confined to his hospital room for two weeks. He had to receive four rounds of blood transfusions, three rounds of blood transfusions, and one round of platelet transfusions. Once Owen left the hospital, he was prescribed blood pressure medication. He also has to see a kidney specialist in Columbia.
In November, the Wells family was hit with a stomach bug. With Owen’s weakened kidneys, he ended up back in the hospital because his body couldn’t fight the infection. Allis also ended up in the hospital because of a rare genetic disorder (she is the only one in America with it). When Allis contracts a virus, she is unable to eat and could die because her ketones do not have the transporter cell to fuel her body. Finally, all Wells family members made it home.
After returning home, Christine and Kody came down with the stomach bug. Kody began experiencing pain in his groin. This pain ended up saving his life. He went to the hospital, where they discovered a large mass. After seeing a urologist, they scheduled surgery and were told it was most likely testicular cancer.
The cancer diagnosis was confirmed: he has seminoma cancer, which is a slow-growing cancer, but once it spreads, it usually goes to the lymph nodes. In early January, Kody lost his job. In late January, he had a CT scan and a follow-up with his oncologist, who informed him that the cancer had spread and was now in his lymph nodes in his stomach.
On February 10th, he started chemotherapy for five days, followed by two weeks off. This treatment will be repeated four times. At the end of this treatment, the hope is that his scans will be clear, and he will be cancer-free!
