Arthur Sterngold’s presentation combines personal stories, recent photographs, and some reflections on art, photography, and place, drawn from a personal journey that is still unfolding. It explores the power of photography to help reveal the beauty and meaning behind the ordinary, and it pays tribute to the time-honored role of local artists and community arts festivals in adding meaning, beauty, and delight to everyday life. This lecture builds upon recent talks he gave at the Taber Historical Museum, although this presentation will be tailored for an audience that is more knowledgeable about the arts, and that hopefully includes a number of practicing artists, art educators, and art supporters. Based on audience feedback from his most recent talks, Arthur feels confident that lecture attendees will find the presentation to be engaging, entertaining, and thought-provoking.
Meet the Presenter
Arthur Sterngold is a fine art photographer whose work celebrates everyday life in North Central Pennsylvania. He studied photography with Emmet Gowin at Princeton University before pursuing an academic career as a business professor at Bucknell University and then at Lycoming College from 1984 to 2021. During that time, he published several articles on the arts and local economic development, including a widely cited critique of arts impact studies in the Journal of Arts Management, Law and Society. Since retiring in 2021, he has returned to photography with a passion, creating a diverse body of work that has earned several solo exhibitions, juried awards, and recognition in regional shows and competitions. He participated in the most recent LAC Members’ Show and Photography Exhibition, and his image of the aging blast furnaces at the former site of Bethlehem Steel won First Place at the Susquehanna Valley Shutterbugs Juried Art Exhibition in May, 2025. Arthur has also given several talks about photography at local venues, including two recent presentations at the Taber Historical Museum in Williamsport entitled “Using Photography to Rediscover the Physicality of Place.”
