Addiction can affect anyone, regardless of age, background, or circumstances. Recovery isn’t a single moment; it’s an ongoing journey that often begins long before treatment and continues well after.
At Fresh Start Recovery, we understand that recovery involves more than just removing the substance. It takes connection, stability, and support. That’s why we focus on a full continuum of care, offering housing, treatment, and long-term support to help individuals and families rebuild their lives.
Before treatment, many face stigma, trauma, and unstable living situations. In treatment, they begin the hard work of healing, building trust, gaining tools, and facing the root causes of their addiction. After treatment, continued support through outreach, housing and community connections is crucial for achieving a lasting recovery.
We’ve been doing this work in Alberta for over 30 years, and we know it wouldn’t be possible without the support of others. Speaker: Bruce Holstead – Executive Director, Fresh Start Recovery
Bruce Holstead has been a part of the recovery community in Alberta for over 25 years—both personally and professionally. His leadership has helped shape how addiction recovery is approached across the province, always with a focus on building strong communities where healing is possible. With nearly 20 years as Director of Operations and as Executive Director, Bruce has been central to Fresh Start’s evolution into a leading organization for long-term recovery. He led the redesign of the program and operating model, strengthening the continuum of care and expanding access to treatment, housing, and support services.
Bruce’s work has always focused on those most vulnerable individuals facing addiction, homelessness, and complex barriers. His experience includes developing nationally recognized social enterprises and training programs, building partnerships that connect people to opportunity, and championing systems that promote dignity and inclusion. At the heart of his leadership is a commitment to Generosity, Gratitude, and Community— the values that guide Fresh Start and the relationships built. Bruce continues to work alongside others to grow a recovery movement rooted in connection, compassion, and collective impact.

Cost is free, donations however, are gratefully accepted.

Lunch and Refreshments: Please arrive early to patronize the LSCO cafeteria and enjoy their excellent variety of good-value food options. The Atrium Dining Room is available by 11:15 am
