De X-Nacht: JALLI LAMIN KUYATEH en SABA ALIZADEH
dubbelconcert van twee maestro’s

Als onderdeel van het Van Rijnfestival presenteert De X vanavond, boven op de historische burcht van Leiden, wederom de X-Nacht met twee artiesten waarvan de muziek recht doet aan deze prachtige locatie.
Jalli Lamin Kuyateh is een vingervlugge kora-speler en zanger uit Gambia die al bijna 30 jaar in Nederland woont. Hij kreeg cultuur met de paplepel ingegoten. Reeds vanaf zijn vijfde volgde hij de opleiding tot koraspeler. Hij is een echte 'jalli' (griot), iemand die binnen de gemeenschap zowel historicus, lofzanger, verhalenverteller, dichter en muzikant is; iemand die de geschiedenis door middel van zang en muziek doorgeeft. Een troubadour eigenlijk.
Met zijn Jalliya Ensemble trad hij op op vele festivals en podia, zoals het Concertgebouw, Tivoli Vredenburg en de Melkweg. Nu zal hij solo optreden.

Saba Alizadeh is niet alleen de zoon van de levende legende Hossein Alizadeh, hij is ook zelf een begenadigd artiest, op de kemenche. Geboren te Teheran, is hij momenteel woonachtig in Leiden. Hij is een van de leidende figuren in de hedendaagse Iraanse muziek. Hij haalt zijn inspiratie uit de klassieke Iraanse muziek en verkent nieuwe mogelijkheden op dit instrument. Zijn expressieve spel, vol subtiele nuances, put uit eeuwenoude tradities, maar tegelijkertijd weet hij de grenzen op te rekken met zijn eigen composities en improvisatie.
Hoewel hij ook bekend is van repertoire waarbij hij elektronische elementen incorporeert in zijn muziek, zal hij vanavond een set spelen die geënt is op de klassieke Perzische traditie.

Tonight, as part of the Van Rijn festival, De X will once again present two artists whose music does justice to this beautiful location at De Burcht.
Jalli Lamin Kuyateh is a nimble kora player and singer from Gambia who has lived in the Netherlands for almost 30 years. He was brought up with music early. He trained as a kora player from the age of five. He is a true 'jalli' (griot), someone who is a historian, singer, storyteller, poet and musician within the community; someone who passes on history through song and music. A troubadour, so to say.

Saba Alizadeh is not only the son of the living legend Hossein Alizadeh, he is also a gifted kemenche player of his own. Born in Tehran, he currently lives in Leiden.
