On Friday and Saturday, August 1st and 2nd, The Mahoning Drive-In Theater proudly presents another tantalizing trip inside WALT’S ANIMATION VAULT, with a rare 35mm double feature of two 1990s Disney cartoon classics, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (1991) and THE LION KING (1994)!
For two nights, two beloved blockbuster films that were part of the 1990s Disney animation renaissance, and helped cement the format for the studio’s features that would continue to this day, hit the big, BIG screen!
On Friday night, we begin with the most beautiful love story ever told. A prince (Robby Benson), cursed to live as a hairy beast, finds love and a possible escape from his physical prison through the love of a young village girl, Belle (Paige O’Hara).
Featuring a memorable songs and the voices of Angela Lansbury, David Odgen Stiers, Richard White, Rex Everheart and Jo Anne Worley, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST was a massive follow-up hit to THE LITTLE MERMAID, and spawned a smash Broadway adaptation, 3D re-release and live-action sequel in the decades after its release.
We follow that magic carpet ride with a trip to the African Pride Lands, and a tale of royal deceit, coming of age, and finding one’s place in the world, in THE LION KING (1994).
With an all-star voice cast that includes Matthew Broderick, Nathan Lane, Jeremy Irons, Whoopi Goldberg, James Earl Jones, and more, young lion prince Simba (Broderick) is cast out of his kingdom by his devious uncle Scar (Irons), and finds a community where he can live a life of no worries. But will he lead a carefree life the rest of his days, or his Simba destined for more? Another megahit for Disney that, like BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, spawned a hit soundtrack, sequels, a long-running Broadway musical, and live-action/CGI remake decades later.
On Saturday night, the order of the films reverses, with THE LION KING playing first, followed by BEAUTY AND THE BEAST.
