Charlie Turner has been dancing since she was 2 and social folk dancing since about 2009, when a chance encounter led to her joining university society Warwick Folk. She started calling whilst living and dancing in San Francisco, and now dances and calls for contra, squares and English country dance, as well as dancing and teaching European folk dance (balfolk), and dancing blues. She is currently based in Cambridge (UK) where she calls regularly for the Round and Cambridge Contra. She is a founder of Cambridge’s gender-free contra dance series, Contrabridge.
You might have previously danced to her calling online at Sea to Sea New Year’s Eve, IVFDF(the UK Inter Varsity Folk Dancing Festival), Mt. Airy or London Barndance, or at in-person dances in the San Francisco Bay area, Sidmouth, Whitby, Cambridge, Halsway, London or Paris.
Contrary Faeries play mostly for contra dance, but also for ceilidh, Playford and bal. Their tunes and songs whisk dancers away to a land where you will forget your troubles, your cares, and the life you lived before… and if you’re lucky you might get to return. They like sleepy jigs, funky reels and chaotic yet considered tune-dance matching on the dance floor.
Contrary Faeries are Joshua Webster (they/them) on fiddle and Sol Loreto-Miller (they/them) on piano, who first played together at Sheffield Scratch Contra. Recognising a fellow chaotic fae spirit, they formed Contrary Faeries on a 4am drive back from Whitby Folk Week 2019 and swore to wreak fabulous havoc on the contra dance world, or at the very least offer callers a suspicious Oreo or two. Since then they have played at dances up and down the country to enthusiastic response.
