About the event

Land Bridge – Launceston – Film Screening and Q&A with Special Guests
FREE EVENT. Join us on Thursday 8th May, 7pm, at the Star Theatre Launceston to watch the 30-minute documentary film and learn about the land bridge which once connected Victoria to Lutruwita/Tasmania.

This is a free event. You are welcome to bring friends, colleagues and family.

The Land Bridge tells the story of Bass Strait when it was a vast grassy plain, part of an ice age landscape people walked across and lived on, between Lutruwita/Tasmania and mainland Australia.
Many thousands of years ago, during the last ice age, falling sea levels exposed the shallow Bass Strait seafloor as land. Mainland Australia became connected to the great southern island of Lutruwita/Tasmania.

The Land Bridge digital story project features contributions from Palawa and Pakana knowledge holders and other First Nations cultural custodians of the former land bridge area, plus Australia-wide experts in marine environments, geomorphology, palaeoecology, archaeology, wildlife conservation and history.

In this entertaining evening, watch the film ‘the Land Bridge’ and then stay to hear more about the project and the story of deep time Bass Strait. Guest panellists include Palawa cultural custodians Fiona Maher and Buck Brown, palaeoecologist Professor Simon Haberle, marine biologist Associate Professor Neville Barrett, and project producers Lucinda Horrocks and Jary Nemo.

The Land Bridge was produced by Wind & Sky Productions and funded by the Australian Government through the Our Marine Parks grant program.
