This psychological drama is a thinking person’s Gothic thriller, a dark comedy that is both funny and frightening. On a snowy night in 1905, Inspector Ruffing is called to a remote house to investigate the headlong plunge of Patrick Roarke down the main staircase. But as he interviews the five beguiling and deceitful women of the house—amid ghost stories, flirtation, and layers of conflicting testimony—his authority begins to unravel.
We are committed to assembling a diverse cast that reflects the richness of our community. Performers of all backgrounds, identities, and experience levels are encouraged to audition.
Character Descriptions: (5 women, 1 man)
Mrs. Ravenscroft- The widow of the house. She is flighty and a little ditzy. Very flirty, even racy. Upper Class English accent preferred. Any age.
Gillian- Mrs. Ravenscroft’s daughter. She is incredibly charming, but walks the line between psychologically conniving and perhaps just unstable. Has some childlike qualities. Upper Class English accent preferred. Older teens to early 20’s
Marcy- Gillian’s beautiful Austrian governess. She is the primary suspect, and acts, from the start, like she has something to hide. She is the most grounded of the women. Austrian accent. 30’s
Mrs. French- The cook. No nonsense, the most formidable during questioning. Protective of the Ravenscrofts. Irish or English accent. Any age
Dolly- The maid. She is afraid of everyone including her own shadow. Somewhat dim-witted, and has her own secrets to keep. Irish or cockney accent. 20’s
Inspector Ruffing- As the only man and sole investigator, he carries nearly half the lines onstage and anchors the play—appearing in every scene. He’s a modern, working man’s detective, who struggles to maintain control, especially when he accepts some alcohol. But he eventually rights himself and gets to the bottom of the mystery. English accent, any age.
