Thanks to Women in History Ohio, a nonprofit that educates through dramatic portrayals of notable women, we will be visited by Cassie Chadwick, portrayed by Ruth Pangrace. This Historic Portrayal will take place at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 25 in Orchestra Hall.
Born in 1857, Chadwick became one of the most infamous con artists in American history. She swindled wealthy men, married several of them, changed her name multiple times and defrauded banks out of millions of dollars.
Her 1905 Cleveland trial, dubbed “the trial of the century,” cemented her notoriety. Also known as the Duchess of Diamonds, the High Priestess of Fraudulent Finance, and Queen of Ohio, Chadwick’s outrageous and unforgettable story continues to fascinate.
Portrayer Pangrace, a Cleveland native, is an educator whose career has spanned teaching preschoolers through post-graduate students. She holds a bachelor’s in art education and a master’s in gifted and talented education.
She guided students to achieve honors in Power of the Pen, Ohio History Day and Middle School Mock Trial. She also developed innovative programs such as Arts Seminar and HIROS, which welcomes refugees in the schools.
Her accolades include Lakewood Teacher of the Year, the Ohio Jennings Master Teacher Award, the Lutheran West Distinguished Alumni Award and induction into Lakewood’s Hall of Fame.
A member of Women in History Ohio since 1996, Pangrace portrays 14 notable women from the past 500 years of our world’s history. She also volunteers at the Hope Center for Refugees and Immigrants in Cleveland.
Outside her professional work, she enjoys sailing on Lake Erie with her husband, children and grandchildren. Performing at Lakeside Chautauqua is one of her favorite engagements each year.
