Join us by the campfire Thursday evenings at 8 p.m. for storytelling and music that will leave you laughing with foot-tapping fun. We end the evening with marshmallow roasting and new friends. The fire pit is located just below Shackford Hall. Bring a chair and enjoy the journey.
July 10 – “Uncle Ted” White
“I learned to play bass out of necessity,” says Ted White. The band needed a bass player.” Stepping into that role for the Whitewater Bluegrass Company, White not only makes a central musical contribution, but he also adds to the band’s performances with storytelling, Opry-style comedy, and dance-calling.
“I’m a third-generation square dance caller in my family. My maternal grandfather called all the dances at Lake Summit and Tryon for years. I also learned from Glenn Bannerman and his whole family.” Among the kinds of dances he can call, White lists the big mountain circle, Western swing, contra, and old-time.
In addition to being the recipient, with his bandmates, of a North Carolina Arts Council grant and the Pfaff Cup from Warren Wilson, White’s work as a musician, caller, storyteller, and humorist has given him opportunities to perform at Warren Wilson College, the Mountain Heritage Center, and the Carter Family Fold. He was part of the Spirit of the Mountains documentary series and has worked in the Center for the Study of the American South and the Museum of Southern Culture.
