Ceremony of Longing

Ceremony of Longing is the meeting point between performance and real ritual and ceremony. It works with a story sent in by a community member a few days before the event. The performers search for "the longing" within the story and guide the witnesses (audience members) into sensing their own longing through a series of repetitive actions and rituals. The piece was born out of the pandemic, when the artists discovered, through embodied investigation, that under much of their shame, conflict, guilt and heaviness, lay a deep and powerful longing. The work posits the body as a primary source of information about self and collective. It combines dance, trance, story and song. If we are to create any kind of peaceful and sustainable future, perhaps we need to first know what we want. With the belief that every story is worth telling and hearing, the performers implore the audience to connect to their own longing.
