התערוכה חומרים חדשים מקבצת שבעה אמנים ישראלים, שבחרו לקיים מערכת יחסים ארוכת שנים עם חומר עבודה ספציפי, הנוכח ביצירתם כשותף פעיל ומוביל. באמצעות מפגש זה הם מבקשים להאיר ולהעיר את העבודה עם החומר, ומציבים מודל של שיח אינטימי מתמשך בין הגוף היוצר לבין המדיום, שעימו הוא עובד. המִנעד החומרי משתנה אצל כל אמן ואמנית בתערוכה, אך כולם אוחזים באותה ידיעה, שלחומר יש תכונות, רצונות וטבע משלו. הם חולקים חוויה דומה של זיקוק המהות, נגיעה ביש ובמרחב שמעבר לקיים.
שם התערוכה, חומרים חדשים, מבקש לראות את החומר בעיניים רעננות; להצביע על חזרתיות נצחית, המתרחשת בעבודת האמנים עם המדיום הנבחר. מדי בוקר פוגשים האמנים את החומר המוכר על שולחן העבודה בסטודיו, מתוך העבודה הם חושפים את הניצוץ הראשוני, הטמון בחומר הגלם עוד מימי המפץ הגדול, ומגלים בו אינסוף צורות וזהויות.
העבודות בתערוכה מאפשרות לשכבות המופיעות בהן, הן הרעיוניות והן הפיזיות, להיות מוזנות מן ההיסטוריה, מזהותן הקודמת ומהתחדשות סך כל החומרים המרכיבים אותן. האובייקטים הקרמיים, הבוקעים מתוך קווי המִתאר הדו-ממדיים של חזית בית סבתה של שחר יהלום, ממלאים את החלל בחיים חדשים. במשטחי העבודה גדולי הממדים של גל וינשטיין, העשויים צמר פלדה וצמר גפן, מתגלים סימנים עדינים, תזכורת לרוח שחלפה, ועוד תשוב. החומרים הטקטיליים בעבודתו של גילי אבישר מכילים בתוכם זיכרון חומרי של עבודות קודמות, אך גם מתפקדים כישויות חדשות ועצמאיות. רצף הפיסול ההיסטורי בעבודתו של זוהר גוטסמן מבקש לייצר לינאריות ומבטא רצון אנושי להיטמע כחלק משרשרת היסטורית. אצל ליהי תורג'מן, באמצעות פיזור הצבע והנחתו על הבד, צפים ומתגלים על פני השטח דימויים ארכיטיפיים, הקמים לתחייה. הרצון להבין את החומר מבפנים מביא את בן הגרי ואת החומר הקרמי לכדי התמזגות מוחלטת. מטרונום אנושי ופנימי, הפועל דרך גופה של חן כהן, מזכיר לה ולנו את המקצב המעגלי של פעימות הלב והעולם.
מתוך נכונות להקשבה כנה למקור החומר ובאמצעות עבודה עם הגוף שאותו הוא נושא וקריאה שונה של המוכר, מאפשרים האמנים לעצמם, וגם לנו, נקודת מבט החורגת מהמגבלות הפיזיות המקרקעות אותנו במקום ובזמן הנוכחיים.

New Materials brings together seven Israeli artists who have chosen to cultivate a long-standing relationship with a central working material—one that is not merely present in their work, but acts as an active, guiding force. Through this encounter, they aim to both illuminate and reawaken the act of working with matter, proposing a model of ongoing intimate dialogue between the artist’s body and the medium with which they engage. Each artist in the exhibition works with a different material spectrum, yet all share a fundamental understanding: material has its own properties, temperament, and will. They speak of a shared experience—of distilling the essence of their material, of touching the present as well as the space just beyond it.
The exhibition’s title, New Materials, invites us to look at matter with fresh eyes; to witness the artists’ return, time and again, to the same familiar materials in their studios, and through them, to uncover the primordial spark embedded in raw matter since the origin of time. Each day, the artists confront what is seemingly known, only to discover within it infinite forms and identities.
The works in the exhibition embrace both conceptual and physical layers—drawing from personal and collective histories, from former identities, and from the constant renewal of the materials that compose them. Ceramic objects breaking forth from the two-dimensional façade of Shahar Yahalom’s grandmother’s house fill the space with new life. On Gal Weinstein’s expansive surfaces, made of steel wool and cotton, faint traces appear—reminders of a wind that once blew and will blow again. The tactile materials in Gili Avissar’s work carry within them the material memory of previous pieces, while also asserting themselves as new and autonomous entities. Zohar Gotesman’s sculptural continuum echoes a historical sequence, striving for linearity and expressing a deep human desire to be part of an ongoing chain. In Lihi Turjeman’s work, paint is spread and scattered across the canvas, giving rise to archetypal images that surface into being. Ben Hagari’s search to understand the material from within leads to a full fusion with the clay. Chen Cohen’s internal human metronome, operating through her own body, reminds her—and us—of the circular rhythm of heartbeat and world.
Through a sincere openness to listen to the source of material, through physical engagement with the body that carries it, and through a re-reading of the familiar, these artists offer themselves—and us—a perspective that transcends the physical anchors of time and place.
