Planting for the future in a changing world

A one-time Native Plant Steward shares a journey to reimagine natural and human history on a postage stamp property in the upper Snohomish River Estuary. Sometimes a confessional, sometimes a memorial to lost beauty, and sometimes a message of hope for people and wildlife in an uncertain future, Monica Van der Vieren shares one person’s path to create a sustainable place on a rapidly changing planet.

Speaker Bio:
Monica Van der Vieren identifies as the poster child for the “anyone can garden” and “what have I gotten myself into now” campaigns. Monica's first career as a research scientist in the biotechnology sector served the public as a communications professional for a large public utility. Along the way, she purchased a small acreage along the Snohomish River.
Through chance encounters, she entered the world of native plants and restoration, and slowly enveloped her postage stamp in plants and wildlife. Monica became a Snohomish County Native Plant Steward in 2003 and has repaid the education through volunteer presentations ever since.
Monica’s journey continues today in the form of a mixed food forest, adopting the forest garden approach of Coast Salish peoples in hopes of creating a small but resilient food source for the future. Every year, she becomes a little more covered in blossoms and moss and hopes the land will continue its own journey when she is gone.
