Settle & Carlisle Railway History Programme: Cumbria Launch Event

To mark Rail 200 and the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Settle & Carlisle railway, the Neighbourhood Project CIC is carrying out a research programme into the history of the line.

We are looking to talk to people who have lived, worked, volunteered or had some other connection with the communities that have been served by current and former stations on the line, or who are familiar with them for some other reason. We are especially interested to find out how the line and its stations benefitted these communities and people's lives.

We will be running a series of 'memory bank' events between October and December this year to capture people’s memories and stories of the line. This will provide us with material for a series of short videos about the history of the line and its stations we hope to produce by Spring next year.

We are running two launch events to explain our programme of work futher: one in North Yorkshire and one in Cumbria. The Cumbria event will take place at the Appleby Hub on Monday 29th September 2025, 1pm to 3pm. This will be an opportunity for people to find out more about what we are doing and how you can get involved - everybody welcome!
