Comedy is like magic—you’re not supposed to explain how it works. But in this class, Trevor Strong does. Through discussions and (non-physical) exercises, participants will step into the slippery world of comedy writing and find solid footing. Trevor will guide participants through different comedic approaches—personal, observational, situational, and functional—and bring them to life through hands-on writing activities.
Failing to Accomplish a Simple Task: comedy thrives on opposites—making an easy task impossibly difficult can lead to hilarious results.
Praise Something Unexpected: pick an ordinary, uninteresting, or even repulsive object, then glorify it as if it were the most magnificent and life-changing item in existence.
Opposite Land: take a situation governed by social rules—such as going through customs—and flip the script entirely.
Make the Normal, Alien: Reimagine a mundane scenario—like an office meeting—through the lens of an outsider encountering it for the first time.
This will be an active and interactive workshop, designed for all writing levels, so be ready to write, experiment, and, of course, laugh. Comedy is for everyone! Whether you’ve dabbled in it before or are just curious to give it a shot, this class will set you on your way with tips and techniques to help you find the funny.
