Sylvain Leroux is a composer, improviser, flutist, saxophonist, and master of the Fula flute—the remarkable traditional instrument of Guinea, West Africa—renowned for his pioneering work at the intersection of jazz and African music. His 2002 album Fula Flute almost single‑handedly sparked worldwide interest in this once little‑known instrument. As a maker and distributor of Fula flutes around the globe, Leroux also invented and patented the “Qromatica,” a fully chromatic version of the instrument. This innovation led him to co‑found L’École Fula Flute, a groundbreaking music education program in Guinea.

"The physicality of Mr. Bisio's bass playing puts him in touch with numerous predecessors in the Avant Garde, but his expressive touch is distinctive."
