Scrambling up Blencathra via Sharp Edge or Halls Fell Ridge
Climbing Blencathra via Sharp Edge or Halls Fell Ridge is a thrilling and memorable mountain adventure that offers breathtaking views, technical scrambling, and a true sense of achievement. Blencathra—also known as Saddleback—is one of the Lake District’s most iconic peaks, and both routes provide exhilarating ways to reach its summit.
Our day typically begins in the village of Threlkeld, where parking is available near the Blencathra Centre. From here, we follow the well-trodden path towards the base of the mountain, gradually ascending across grassy slopes and rocky terrain with ever-improving views of the surrounding fells.
As we gain height, the route will branch towards either Sharp Edge or Halls Fell Ridge—two of the Lake District’s most celebrated scrambles. Throughout the ascent, Matt or one of our experienced guides will assess the weather, your confidence, and your ability before committing to the technical section. Your safety and enjoyment are always our top priorities, and if conditions aren’t right, we will opt for a safer alternative route to the summit.
If conditions are favourable, and you’re ready for the challenge, the scramble begins.
Sharp Edge is a spectacular arête—narrow, exposed, and with dramatic drops on either side. It demands a steady head for heights, good balance, and confident footwork. Hands-on scrambling is required, and the sense of exposure is very real.
Halls Fell Ridge, while slightly less exposed, is still a thrilling route to the summit. It offers a continuous scramble with steep sections, rocky outcrops, and ever-expanding views as you climb.
Both routes lead you directly to the summit ridge, where the exposure eases and the sense of accomplishment is undeniable.
At the summit of Blencathra, you’ll be rewarded with commanding panoramic views across the Lake District—Skiddaw, Helvellyn, Derwentwater, and even the distant Pennines on a clear day. It’s the perfect place to pause, reflect, and soak in the stunning landscape.
For the descent, there are several options, including retracing our steps or descending via Doddick Fell, depending on conditions, time, and group preference.
Please note that scrambling via Sharp Edge or Halls Fell Ridge is not suitable for inexperienced walkers or those with a fear of heights. A good level of fitness, appropriate footwear, and a head for exposure are essential.
