Retrofit Lab Workshop: Pre-Drywall Blower Door

In this 90-minute onsite workshop, builders Matt Kulp and Nicole Tysvaer will demonstrate the benefits of performing a pre-drywall blower door test to identify air leakage in the envelope of an addition project on a mid-century home in Kensington, MD. Participants will learn effective practices to prep the site for testing, building a temporary wall to isolate the testing area, using infrared cameras and smoke tracers to identify leaks, selecting appropriate sealants and foams to address leaks, and incorporating the existing house into testing parameters. This course will demonstrate how a 90-minute mid-construction intervention can have a tremendous impact on the quality, comfort and efficiency of home remodeling projects. Participants will also have the opportunity to tour the house and observe the high-performance aspects of a sustainable retrofit aspiring to US DOE Zero Energy Ready Home certification.
