Learn the gentle art of English Paper Piecing, a traditional hand-sewing patchwork method for mindful crafting and fabric scraps upcycling.
Ticket price: £25 + booking fee (concession tickets available)
Join us for an introduction to the gentle art of English Paper Piecing (EPP). This traditional hand-sewn patchwork technique originated in England in the late 1700s. Also known as 'Mosaic Patchwork', EPP is one of the oldest patchwork techniques that has survived through the ages.
EPP patchwork is a highly portable craft which you can carry with you to indulge in some mindful sewing anytime, anywhere! It's also a great way to use up fabric scraps!
Jane will introduce you to the EPP method, which involves stabilising a fabric patch by fixing it to a paper template (the 'paper piece') and sewing the stabilised patches together into larger patterns, or quilt blocks. Then together we will put your new skills into practice with a simple project to take home.
This relaxed pace, small group workshop is suitable for beginners.
You will learn how to:
- transform old t-shirts into yards of chunky yarn
- hold a crochet hook and yarn in a way that suits you
- make a simple round basket using a few basic crochet stitches
We will provide:
- all the fabrics, paper, needles, pins and threads you will need
- printed worksheets to take home
- hot drinks and biscuits (organic and palm-oil free)
What to bring
- a pair of good quality fabric scissors
- any cotton fabric scraps that you’d particularly like to use (e.g. old items of clothing)
Your host for this workshop is Jane Walton, a local sewing instructor with years of experience helping people learn a wide variety of sewing skills. We are delighted to partner with Jane to offer you a series of learning to sew workshops in 2025/6.
