This action packed weekend teaches students all they need to go home and dye protein fibers multiple ways with weak acid dyes, food coloring, and kool aid, using basic material they can gather from thrift stores and local grocery stores or department stores on a small budget and beyond.
Day One we cover all of the basics. Students will learn all of the basic tools, and material needed to dye, where to get them and how they are used. Students learn “submersive dyeing” of yarn and fibers in stock pots, crock pots, and turkey roasters throughout the morning. During the afternoon the microwave, strainers, and lobster pots are up as students learn hand paint techniques to create striping yarns, lovely braids, and steam set their work.
Day Two we build upon day one’s skills. The day begins by learning to make multiple colors of the rainbow from three primary colors. This allows students to see how different colors interact with one another as we move into the afternoon where we learn about overdye. Throughout the afternoon, students will work to change fibers of color they aren’t too happy about into something they do and work with natural colored fibers (browns etc).
$50 Material Fee Included in Cost of Registration: for handouts, fiber and yarn to dye, dyed fiber and yarn to overdye, kits to take home to continue. All fiber and yarn will be corriedale wool from the instructor’s flock of sheep.
