坊間以梵谷為主題的叢書可謂汗牛充棟，但絕大多數皆由圖像為切入角度，使讀者領略梵谷其人之性格與創作背景。然而梵谷所流傳至今的九百多封往來信件，亦足以成為後世欲走進其內心世界，了解藝術思想與人生價值觀最為珍貴的史料。

本書作者為台灣少數精讀整理梵谷書信，並親身走訪梵谷生前各居留處考察的研究者，企盼通過九百餘封書信的統整與歸類，讓廣大民眾在欣賞藝術作品的機會之外能更進一步貼近梵谷的內在感受與多元的思想境界。
