Monthly Meditation: Trataka

Each month we practice a different meditation style or technique, in the hopes of introducing students to something they are more likely to practice on their own. June offers the tradition of Trataka, or single-point gazing.

With our gaze to a candle flame, Trataka quickly narrows focus and turns attention inward, creating calm and soothing the mind. When this attention is uninterrupted by blinking or movement, the eyes tear, a purifying process known as a shatkriya. This practice requires only the ability to gaze, making it perfect for both beginners and experienced practitioners.
