Join the Timetraveller on an epic journey in the historic heart of old town Jozi. We take walk through Ferreiras Dorp and Marshalltown to explore the history, myths and urban legends that shaped the city of Gold.
On our adventure we go down into the old Ferreiras mine tunnel to discover which one of the 3 Georges actually made the discovery of gold? And how did the discovery of gold shape the Witwatersrand?
On Gandhi square we see a great example of inner-city regeneration while discussing Mahatma Gandhi’s role in South Africa.
Down historic main street we see at some of the mining equipment that makes up the outdoor museum, including a stamp battery that was buried in a mine dump for 23 years!
At the Anglo-American Campus (now the Mahishiri institute) we marvel not only at the amazing architecture but also at the ingenuity of the early mining magnates, who, by the way, all came from Kimberley.
Our journey ends through the narrow streets of Ferreirastown – one of the oldest districts in town, which leads us to the Randjieslaagte beacon – that signifies the very spot where the early town was established in 1886.
