🚨 Special Announcement🚨
In celebration of Freedom, JCMOMA is holding an art contest! We invite you to submit an original painting or drawing of what symbolizes Freedom for you.
Purvis Young, (1943-2010) was a self-taught African-American artist who spent many years living off the streets, painting and creating pieces using discarded and ordinary objects as canvases. His paintings make rich use of symbolism. Young used a wild horse, untamed, and free to represent the hope of freedom and freedom itself in his paintings.
Thursday, June 19 is Juneteenth, (short for “June Nineteenth”) marks the day federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, sharing the news that the emancipation proclamation had been signed, a full two and a half years after the signing in 1863.
