About the event

19th-century Art created by Rock County women
Rock County Historical Society to Showcase 19th-Century Art by Women of Rock County

Janesville, WI – The Rock County Historical Society (RCHS) will showcase 19th-Century Art created by Rock County women at 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 2, and Sunday, August 3, in the Lincoln-Tallman House. This program will focus on the artistic contributions and talents of women from the 19th century in Rock County, featuring various forms of art including painting, music, poetry, detailed hair art, and artistic quilts. After the presentation, attendees can view the artworks displayed on the first floor of the historic home.

The event aligns with the Society’s 67th Annual Tallman Arts Festival, which will be held on Saturday, August 2, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, August 3, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the RCHS campus located at 440 N. Jackson Street in Janesville. The festival is sponsored by Blackhawk Community Credit Union.

This program has limited seating and celebrates the local roots and lasting artistic heritage of Rock County—an inspiration that persists today through the Tallman Arts Festival. Attendees will delve into the lives of 19th-century women from Rock County through their art, while also gaining perspective on how women were portrayed in the popular art of that time.

A key feature of the program includes a viewing and discussion of a painting by Margaret Tallman, who was the daughter-in-law of William Morrison Tallman.
