The future is circular - and Indonesia has taken game-changing steps to steer its manufacturing sector into more sustainable production. A World Bank report in 2023 ranked Indonesia as Southeast Asia's manufacturing powerhouse with value of more than US$255 billion. With its huge population of 280 million, there is no doubt that Indonesia has become the leading market in the region for consumer products.
The launch of the Circular Economy Roadmap and National Action Plan (2025-2045) in 2024 by the Indonesian Government provides guidelines where industry stakeholders are required to take an active role in the transition towards a circular economy. Both documents mark an important milestone in the country's serious commitment to address climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution through the shift away from the traditional linear model towards a circular economy model. At the center of this development is the plastics manufacturing sector, which continues to face many challenges. Yet Indonesia's plastics market is projected to grow by at least 5.1% annually to reach US$8.1 billion by 2030.
