The Feast of James Weldon Johnson

The Rev. Deacon Tommy Rhoads will preside and preach at Saint Luke's Episcopal Church in Jackson on Wednesday, June 25, at 5:30 pm.

The occasion will celebrate the Feast of James Weldon Johnson, American author, poet, songwriter, and early civil rights activist. In the 1920s Johnson was one of the major inspirations and promoters of the Harlem Renaissance, and along with his brother, John Rosamond Johnson, composed the "Black National Anthem," Lift Every Voice and Sing.

The service will feature a reading of Johnson's poetry by local poet and author, James Cherry, as well as his hymn, Lift Every Voice and Sing, along with other African American spiritual hymns and music composed and arranged by African American musicians.

A pot-luck dinner will follow the service. Everyone is invited.
