Throughout 2025 I will be hosting a series of workshops throughout Scotland on making your own Art materials. Join me for a half day workshop learning simple processes for making botanical non-toxic inks, sustainable watercolour paints & liquid charcoal for creative projects! We will be working with locally sourced organic materials including garden plants, ethically foraged wild plants & food waste.
The goal of my studio and my practice is to have as little impact on the environment at possible - which includes eliminating toxins/chemical run off when I wash my brushes. The labels on store-bought paints produced on mass never provide us with information about how something was made, the origin of raw materials, who produced it and under which conditions, what it contains, and what impact it had on our environment during the manufacturing process! I constantly found myself questioning the ethics behind my materials which is why I started making my own and really hung to the connection I was making to my surroundings in the process.
In this workshop we will cover making:
Reed Pens:
Reed pens are biodegrable pens used for drawing/writing.
Charcoal:
Charcoal can be made from any organic material. We will explore different ways to use charcoal with different instruments.
Botanical Inks:
Natural Inks are a fantastic eco-friendly, non-toxic alternative to petroleum based inks. These can be used for drawing, writing and painting.
Liquid Charcoal:
Liquid Charcoal is my new favourite drawing medium.. It can be made easily at home with charred plant matter. Each will give a slightly different black tone. Liquid charcoal has a consistency similar to gouache but can be watered down to give different shades and structures. It has the appearance of a charcoal drawing upon drying, it’s malleable and easy to move, is a great dust-free alternative to Charcoal.. and it’s completely Vegan.
Watercolour Paint:
Watercolour paint is paint made from dry pigment mixed with a binder (Gum Arabic). Natural Pigments can be found everywhere, with many of these hues originating from the earth itself: the rich tones of soil, clay, sand, or stone.
