About the event

Member Walk: Spring Wildflowers & Butterflies
Explore and learn about the wildflowers and butterflies that are abundant in Point Reyes!

About this Event

Join PRNSA Field Institute Instructor and naturalist Wendy Dreskin and  our member community for a four-mile out-and-back hike from the Muddy Hollow trailhead to Limantour Beach, learning about the wildflowers and butterflies that call this area home.

From swallowtails to blues, April is a wonderful time to see butterflies in Point Reyes. Native host plants like milkmaids and yarrow are blooming alongside introduced plants that native butterflies have adapted to, like trailing blackberry—creating a rich habitat for a variety of butterflies, including Western Pine Elfins, California Ringlets, and Red Admirals. On this walk, we will search for a variety of species and observe behaviors including puddling, nectaring, and if we’re lucky, egg laying! We’ll also learn to identify both native and non-native host plants, giving you valuable skills for future butterfly observation. We’re excited for this opportunity to come together and enjoy spring and the gifts of the land the season brings, and hope you’ll join us!

Muddy Hollow trail is mostly flat and wide, meandering alongside a stream.
