Collagraph is a method of printmaking that uses texture to create a wide variety of tone and line on a plate. The process begins by making a textured plate from a thin mount board base where a variety of materials are applied to create an intricately textured printing plate. The plate is printed using an etching press and can be printed intaglio, relief or both.
Over the weekend participants will learn a range of techniques for making collagraph plates as well as a variety of ways of printing using both intaglio and relief processes. Firstly we will approach the process from a traditional ‘collage’ perspective where we adhere different types of materials, textured wall paper, dried plant material, textiles, threads feathers etc to a piece of mount board which is then varnished with shellac before being inked up and printed.
Secondly we will make carborundum plates on thin mdf in a process developed by Lennox Dunbar at Gray’s School of Art and called ‘Painted Intaglio’ With this process we will build up images in a painterly way using layers of paint and varnish for the lights and varying grades of carborundum grit to build up the darks.
We will then experiment with inking up techniques for the plates we have made, looking at combinations of Relief and Intaglio processes. Beginning with simple scrim and tissue wiping, going through À la poupée inking and wiping (where we ink up with multiple colours on the same plate) and working with relief roll.
