Course Description: SMRT: Lower Extremities live class or video course will help you to work the thighs, knees, lower legs, ankles, and feet. You will learn to successfully work with:
- Hypertonic IT bands
- Femur head imbalances
- Knee pain and inflammation
- Chondromalacia Patella
- Shin splints and muscle cramps
- Lymphedema in the lower leg
- Ankle immobilization
- Overpronation or oversupination of the foot
- Plantar Fasciitis, bunions, and tarsal tunnel syndrome
- And more
SMRT is a positional release modality. The principles of SMRT are similar to Strain Counterstrain and PRT. When we use SMRT, we move the tissue or body part into a position of ease or comfort. In other words, if tissue is shortened, we shorten it further. What we believe is happening when we do passively move tissue into its existing pattern is described in a theory called Proprioceptive Theory.
Proprioceptive Theory states, in simple terms, that when tissue is in a dysfunctional pattern there is an imbalance in activity between the golgi tendon organs and the muscle spindle cells that leaves the muscle spindle cells more sensitive. This sensitivity leads to increased restriction and sustained contraction. SMRT positions decrease muscle spindle cell activity and restore length to shortened tissues.
What is the benefit of SMRT for practitioners?

Clients receiving SMRT treatments have reported the following:
- that SMRT positions are incredibly relaxing giving them a feeling of euphoria
- that they feel like the smallest movements are working deep within their body
- reduction in pain while the position is being held
- decreased inflammation, typically after one or two positions
- increased movement when the session is over
- results that last longer then other therapies they have - experienced
Where should you begin your SMRT courses?
There are 5 courses in our basic series. They are SMRT: Head & Neck (with or without Cranial Sacral Therapy); SMRT: Arm & Hand; SMRT: Shoulder, Axilla, Ribcage, & Upper Back; SMRT: Hips, Lower Back, & Abdomen; and SMRT: Lower Extremities. You may begin your SMRT training with any of these classes.
SMRT: Lower Extremities will teach you to work with all of the tissues in the thigh, knee, lower leg, ankle, and foot to balance the muscle tone, alleviate or reduce pain, increase ROM, and much more.

Class textbook: We will be sending you a digital copy of the textbook for this class. You may use the book digitally or print the book and bring it to class with you. The instructor will have 5 textbooks for sale at the class for $30 each. Since we will be sending you a digital book, if you withdraw from class after confirming by text, $30 will be taken from your payment for the book. Once the book is paid for, regular refund policies apply.

In addition to the textbook, bring a set of sheets, whatever oil/lotion/cream you work with, and any anatomy book you have (if you do not have one, that is fine). You are welcome to bring, but do not have to bring, a blanket, a pillow, a rolling chair, a bolster, or anything else that will make you comfortable. We will need massage tables. One to two weeks before class, we will send you a text confirmation asking if you can bring a table. If you live within driving distance, please bring a table because people who are flying in for the class may have to pay $200 each direction for an oversized bag. When we have the amount of tables we need +2, we will let you know by text that we do not need you to bring a table. We are incredibly appreciative of those who bring their tables to class. You will be able to leave your table in the conference room for the full class.
For class, please do not wear essential oils, heavily scented deodorants, perfume, or cologne, or heavily scented lotions. We have students who have allergies. We do not allow animals into classes. We have students who have allergies. You have registered for a group learning experience, an SMRT class. If you require individual attention, you will need to set up an individual class in which the instructor can pay attention to only you for the duration of class. Three days of individual instruction will cost approximately 5 times the cost of the group class you are registering for.
