We are excited for our TOMATO and PEPPER offerings for this year! To enable you to pick your perfect plants here is some information that might help:
DWARF TOMATOES
We are growing lots of dwarf tomato varieties this year after having tested several of them in 2024. We were impressed! They are dwarf plants that produce full sized fruit, which make them good for smaller space gardens, or if you desire to grow many varieties in limited space. They are Dwarf Tomato Project varieties. An internet search will provide more information if you enjoy doing research.
HYBRIDS vs. HEIRLOOMS vs. OPEN POLLINATED (OP)
There is a lot of controversy and confusion between growing hybrid, heirloom and open-pollinated tomatoes and what the differences are between them.
OPEN POLLINATED (OP) tomatoes reproduce true to form from seed if they have not been cross pollinated with another variety of tomato. If you remove a seed from an Amish Paste tomato (an open pollinated variety) and plant it, it will grow an Amish Paste tomato. Therefore, if you wish to save seeds from year to year for planting, the seeds you plant from your tomato will produce the same tomato that you harvested the seed from, barring cross-pollination, which would produce a hybrid tomato.
HEIRLOOM
You spoke and we listened! We’ve UPPED our heirloom variety selection for 2025! An HEIRLOOM tomato is an open pollinated variety that reproduces true to form from seed and has been grown for many years. Many varieties are known for their exceptional size and flavor. For that reason many people want to grow them. Unfortunately there’s a catch however. Many heirlooms have long maturity dates, which make it difficult for them to produce ripe fruit in our climate. Our heirloom offerings have been selected for shorter maturity dates to provide you with ripe fruit in our area.
HYBRID tomatoes are grown by carefully crossing two varieties of tomatoes to produce an improved variety that displays good qualities from both parents. A good example of that is our Genuwine tomato, which is a cross between Costoluto Genovese and Brandywine, two heirloom tomatoes. These crosses may produce tomatoes that ripen earlier, which is important in our climate, have improved flavor or heightened disease resistance. A hybrid of two tomato varieties does not genetically modify the resulting new variety.
We grow open pollinated, heirlooms and hybrid varieties which will generally ripen in our area, depending on the season’s weather.
HARDENING OFF
Hardening off is the process of adapting plants that have grown in somewhat sheltered conditions (under grow lights or in a greenhouse) to the harsher environment found outdoors in our gardens (intense sunlight/temperature variables/wind etc., in other words Idaho weather 🥶🌞⛈️❄️💨) This can be accomplished by gradually exposing plants to the elements for the first few days by protecting them from intense sun, wind, heat and cold and gradually allowing more exposure. We try to toughen up your plant as much as possible but care needs to be taken for the first week or so.
PLANTING
Make sure to plant your tomato after all danger of frost has passed (see MATURITY DATE below) or if an unexpected frost occurs early or late in the season make sure to protect your plants with some sort of cover.
Ask us about a special planting technique that we recommend that helps your plant grow extra roots with more vigor so that it will produce lots of fruit for you. We can even demonstrate how to do so and supply an instruction sheet for you.
MATURITY DATE
We try to offer varieties that will ripen in our Idaho Falls area Climate Zone 5b. Our last spring frost is generally between mid-May and late-May. The first fall frost is generally between late-September and mid-October. Therefore, most of our varieties ripen from planting in 75 days or less. A few varieties sneak in that take longer than that, which might work for you if you are growing in a greenhouse, have an exceptional micro-climate that would extend your growing season, or if you are a gambler and desire a challenge. Be aware of that - it’s no fun freezing while picking baskets of green tomatoes with snowflakes falling. We know from experience. 😒
PRICING
We are all aware of skyrocketing plant prices over the past few years. We don’t enjoy them either. We therefore try to keep prices affordable for you as best we can. Pricing for tomato and pepper plants this year is the same as last year - $3.00 per plant. Most tomatoes are grown in 16 ounce containers with a good root system so they will take off for you when planted.
OTHER PLANTS?
We are often asked if we have other plants available. We do! They will be offered at various prices and degress of availability. We should (barring unforeseen circumstances) have some

COMFREY (aka KNIT-BONE, for it’s healing properties) - GROW YOUR OWN FERTILIZER, MEDICINAL SALVE and LIVESTOCK FODDER!
Gotta love this very productive perennial plant!!! We have Bocking #4 comfrey plants for sale this year. They do not spread invasively but are tenacious survivors where they are planted, so you will want to plant them in a sunny or part sunny location where they can live their long and healthy life. It is a perennial plant that benefits you, your garden and your livestock - a wonderful bio-accumulator that reaches deep into the soil to extract minerals for you, your plants and your livestock. It can be added to your compost pile to give it a jump start and additional nutrients or used as a mulch around your fruiting plants - tomatoes, peppers and eggplants love it. I add it, chopped up, into their planting holes. It can be steeped into an herbal “tea” fertilizer that benefits your fruiting garden plants. It’s an organic substitute to the well known blue chemical fertilizer you can purchase. It can be made into an effective healing, external salve. It can be fed to your livestock, which will benefit from its high protein, vitamin and mineral content. Attractive to bees and other pollinators. Resistant to pests. Research comfrey on line for even more uses! One fantastic plant!!! Not for human internal consumption.
HOSTAS
The most popular shade perennial plant comes along later in the season. Look for our hosta sale advertisement most likely in mid June - early July on Facebook, Nextdoor and Craigslist - or text for information at 208-403-8432
Finally!!!!! Here’s the embarrassingly long list you have been waiting for! (Told you I like to talk tomatoes!)

TOMATOES 2025
Please note when making your selections:
LIMITED TO STOCK ON HAND - Some varieties in limited/very limited supply
INDETERMINATE: Tomato “vine” grows through entire season until killed by frost. Fruit sets through season for a prolonged harvest.
DETERMINATE: Tomato “bush” grows to a predetermined size then bears it’s crop all at about the same time for ease of processing (canning, salsa, sauces etc.).
DWARF: Indeterminate “vine” that has shorter stem length between leaves, resulting in normal sized fruit on a considerably more compact plant. Generally vigorous, stocky, beautiful plants.
OP: Open Pollinated (see description above)
Hint: Checking off varieties you are interested in and bringing the list to the sale may make your selection process easier. There are a lot to look through when you are here! If you would like me to text the list to you, please send me a text.
