About the event

Marine & Cultural Connections: Nantucket Sound & the Azores
Did you know that the waters around Cape Cod and the Azores—an island group in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean—are connected in more ways than one?

Join us for a fascinating look at the shared marine life and history between southeastern Massachusetts and the Azores. Our guest speaker, Robert Rocha of the New Bedford Whaling Museum, will guide us through old whaling logbooks to uncover what sailors saw on their journeys from New Bedford, through Nantucket Sound, and across the ocean to the Azores.

You'll learn how whales, dolphins, and other sea creatures link these distant places—and how the people, history, and culture of the region are deeply connected too.

ABOUT ROBERT ROCHA
Mr. Rocha is the Associate Curator of Science and Research at the New Bedford Whaling Museum. He develops all science content for museum exhibits, cataloging and managing the natural history collection, and serving as liaison to several agencies and partners. He has also been responsible for developing and presenting science curriculum for school groups, creating and managing the High School Apprenticeship Program, managing and training the Museum’s volunteer corps, developing outreach programs, developing science programs for general audiences, and providing professional development for teachers.

He is Executive Director of Massachusetts Marine Educators (MME), past President of National Marine Educators Association (NMEA), Chair of the Education Committee of the North Atlantic Right Whale Consortium, and serves on the Advisory Committee for New Bedford Science Café.

He co-authored "Emptying the Oceans: A Summary of Industrial Whaling in the 20th Century," published by NOAA’s Office of Publications. When not at work, he sails and rows Azorean whaleboats with the Azorean Maritime Heritage Society or plays bass, focusing on classic rock and blues.
