The Dandy Blacksmith - photographs by Walter Tate

Walter Tate (1859-1946) was a Stella blacksmith. But he was also an artist and a professional photographer, a snappily dressed dandy with a waxed moustache. His surviving photos of our local area show farmworkers, blacksmiths, miners, fishermen, top-hatted toffs, women whitewashing their cottages, gathering their crops, feeding their geese, sweeping their yards, children playing and helping with the crops and laughing at the camera. In the background are places we know and some not yet identified. Come along to our meeting on Wednesday 28th May for a talk about Walter and a slideshow of his photographs – you might be able to recognise people and places.
