As WW2 begins, a young boy, William Beech is placed as an evacuee with the grumpy Tom Oakley. Despite initial misgivings, Tom cares deeply for William. William makes friends with the charismatic Zach and is happy in the country. Then a message arrives from William’s mother, she wants him back home to London . She has a surprise for him.
A story which cannot fail to move an audience.
Cast Details
Tom: grumpy, private but with a heart of gold well hidden. As his relationship with William develops we see his caring side (60+)
William: downtrodden, timid, gradually comes to life under Tom’s care.(12/13). This role will be played by 2 youngsters.
Zach: very confident, charismatic, always performing (13/14) Might be played by 2 youngsters.
Carrie and Ginnie: sisters, bubbly and fun. Will also play Evacuees and Londoners( 11-13)
George: mischievous, confident . Will also play Evacuee and Londoner(12/13)
Mrs Beech: Williams mother: cold, uncaring, always cross. Only in Act 2. Doubles as Mrs Hartridge in Act 1( 35-45ish)
