Rise & Shine - Kupuna Movie Mornings - "THE PHILADELPHIA STORY" (1940)

Come enjoy a morning of classic cinema, full of glamour, laughter, and love triangles with the Academy Award-winning “The Philadelphia Story,” June 10 at Hawaii Theatre.



More than 80 years after its release, director George Cukor’s sparkling 1940 romantic comedy “The Philadelphia Story” continues to charm audiences with its wit, timing, and old-school star power.



Set in the high society world of Philadelphia’s Main Line, this classic stars the legendary Katharine Hepburn in one of her most iconic roles, alongside the suave Cary Grant and the effortlessly charming James Stewart.



The story revolves around Tracy Lord (Hepburn), a fiercely independent and sharp-tongued socialite preparing for her second marriage. When her ex-husband, the charismatic C.K. Dexter Haven (Grant), unexpectedly arrives with a pair of tabloid reporters—one of whom is the cynical but endearing Macaulay "Mike" Connor (Stewart)—chaos ensues. Over the course of a whirlwind weekend, Tracy is forced to confront her ideals about love, class, and vulnerability, leading to revelations that are both humorous and heartfelt.



“The Philadelphia Story” was adapted from the Broadway play written specifically for Hepburn after a string of box-office disappointments. The role helped revitalize her career and won James Stewart his only Academy Award for Best Actor. The film was also nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and remains a timeless example of the screwball comedy genre.
