Celebrating 200 years since the Canterbury & Whitstable Railway bill was granted royal assent, and construction work commenced on the line, we will be two excellent documentary screenings coming up locally. Discover the history of the world’s first steam hauled passenger railway.
The Canterbury & Whitstable Railway documentary tells the story of the world's first steam hauled railway. With the Wantsum at Reculver and the Stour at Canterbury unsuitable for Carrying goods, 200 years ago work began on the historic railway line which became known as the Crab & Winkle. Various branch lines and routes via Herne Bay were proposed but never built.
Tyler's Hill Tunnel, the world's first passenger railway tunnel, was constructed by a well-known Herne Bay contractor, with some rather unusual discoveries found within. Robert Stephenson's Invicta, the original 1830 locomotive, which once stood at the city wall in Canterbury, is now Proudly displayed at Whitstable Museum. At the beginning of the industrial revolution boom, how did rural Kent come to be a forerunner for this new breed of pioneering transportation?
