Dorodango is a traditional Japanese technique where simple natural materials like soil and water are shaped and polished by hand into a smooth, shining sphere. This process allows participants to experience how raw materials slowly gain a gentle glow through time and careful touch.
This workshop is based on Sakan, a Japanese plastering craft with a history of more than 400 years. Apprentices in this craft learn to understand the qualities of natural materials such as earth, straw, sand, and water by feeling them directly with their hands. Creating Dorodango is a basic exercise that helps develop this sensitivity by patiently layering and shaping the materials.
The workshop is led by Ryo Mitani, a plaster artisan from Kyoto visiting Finland for the first time. Participants will take time to mold and polish earth by hand, witnessing how simple materials change into beautiful forms. The finished Dorodango will eventually return to the soil. By working closely with natural materials, this experience offers a chance to connect with the nature that surrounds us every day.
This workshop welcomes all, especially plaster artisans, artists, designers, traditional craft lovers, and anyone interested in natural materials, mindful handwork, or environmental awareness. No previous experience is needed.
The workshop will be conducted with Japanese and English interpretation.
